Mounjaro, containing the active ingredient Tirzepatide, is a once-weekly injectable prescription medication used in adults with type 2 diabetes to improve blood sugar control, alongside diet and exercise. It is a dual agonist that mimics two natural gut hormones, GIP and GLP-1, to help regulate blood sugar. It can also be used for weight management in adults who are overweight or have obesity.

Mounjaro is used for the following conditions:
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: It is used alone or with other diabetes medicines to improve blood sugar control.
Weight Management: It is used as an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for weight loss and maintenance in adults with a BMI of 30 kg/m² or greater (obesity) or those with a BMI of 27 kg/m² to < 30 kg/m² (overweight) with at least one weight-related health problem.
Tirzepatide, the active ingredient, works by activating receptors for both GIP and GLP-1 hormones. This dual action helps to:
Stimulate the pancreas to release more insulin when blood sugar levels are high.
Decrease glucagon production, which helps lower blood sugar.
Slow down stomach emptying, which helps control blood sugar spikes after meals and makes you feel full for longer, leading to reduced food intake.
Patients may experience side effects, particularly when first starting the medication. Common side effects include:
Nausea and vomiting.
Diarrhea or constipation.
Stomach pain.
Decreased appetite.
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience:
Severe allergic reactions, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or trouble breathing.
Symptoms of pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), including severe, persistent stomach pain that may radiate to the back.
Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially if used with other diabetes medications like a sulfonylurea or insulin. Symptoms may include dizziness, sweating, or confusion.
A lump or swelling in the neck, hoarseness, or trouble swallowing, which could be a sign of thyroid tumors.
Mounjaro is not for people with type 1 diabetes or a personal or family history of a specific type of thyroid cancer (medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2).
Patients should inform their healthcare provider if they have a history of pancreatitis, kidney disease, or diabetic retinopathy.
This medication is administered via a weekly subcutaneous injection in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. It is important to rotate the injection site with each dose to prevent skin irritation.
In Accra, as a prescription-only medicine, it should be used under the supervision of a healthcare provider. Rankof Pharmacy can provide this medication with a valid prescription and offer guidance on proper storage and administration.
